I have the same problem here: fedora 14, x64. I do not believe the reason for this is a slow graphic device or a slow computer. I have 8GB Ram and a fast ATI graphic card, i5core intel processor...

It is somewhere in the settings I guess.. but I havn't found out yet where...

PHP 5.4 and onwards will see safe_mode removed forever. I turn it off and just make sure my permissions are set correctly.

Annoyingly, in Plesk 10.4 there has been an update that breaks safe_mode. It remains constantly on, even when turning it off in the subscription plan settings and the domain settings themselves, meaning there's little you can do apart from wait for a patch. There has already been one, but it doesn't seem to work.

export SSL_CERT_FILE instead. and also, in your example you have to set port 443 and force ssl..

export SSL_CERT_FILE=/etc/ssl/certs/ca-certificates.crt

uri = URI.parse("https://www.google.com/")
http = Net::HTTP.new(uri.host, 443)
http.use_ssl = true
request = Net::HTTP::Get.new(uri.request_uri)
response = http.request(request)

Yeah, most of the articles tell you how to not verify the peer but that's definitely not what you want. I just updated this article after finding out about the "ca-certificates" package within Ubuntu, makes it much easier and can be included in your chef/puppet recipes.

This works. I'm linking to this article because there are too many posts which provide instructions for turning off verification. They usually provide a disclaimer but it still needs to be addressed if you ever want your code in a production environment.

I downloaded the cert and dropped it in a location. I was using httpadapter and simply specified the file location like this:

adapter = HTTPAdapter::NetHTTPAdapter.new do |http|
 http.connection.ca_file = 'cacert.pem'

Thanks for this. I had been struggling to update wordpress for ages - have been using FTP for about a year now - and today finally decided I had to work out what was wrong.

But ... what is php safe mode? By turning "safe" off is there increased risk of something bad happening?
